Keep Your Hot Tub Running Like New

Posted 12/5/2016

When you first purchase a hot tub, staying on top of maintenance is at the forefront of your mind. But as the years go on, it's easy to let maintenance slide. In this post, you'll learn simple maintenance tips that will help you get your hot tub running like new and keep it in excellent condition.

Create a Maintenance Schedule

Making a schedule that outlines when to perform specific maintenance tasks will help you consistently keep your hot tub in great shape. Keep in mind that depending on how often you use your hot tub, you may need to perform these tasks more or less often.

Once a week, shock your hot tub with chlorine or bromine. If you experience problems with foam during the shock process, a foam reducer can help. If your water is harder and contains high levels of minerals, use a product to prevent scaling. This will ensure that your pumps and hoses are not damaged by scaling.

Some tasks need to be completed only a couple of times per year. Even if you don't have scaling issues, apply a de-scaler up to twice per year to keep mineral residue at bay. Clean your hot tub filter at least three times a year, carefully following the instructions in your owner's manual.

Make Your Water Sparkle

There are a variety of things you can do to keep your hot tub water clean and clear.

First, when installing your hot tub, choose an area that isn't near trees or roads to reduce debris. Keeping your water balanced is also important. Make sure to do a pH test every day and make chemical adjustments as soon as you notice an imbalance. By keeping pH in check, you'll create less work for yourself in the long run. Keeping your pH balanced will also reduce scale buildup and help you avoid major pH issues that can cost you time and money later on.

Another great way to keep water clean is to make sure your guests shower prior to entering the hot tub. This will reduce the buildup of body oils in the water that can damage your hot tub's components.

A high-functioning filter is also crucial to keeping water clean. To keep your filter in top shape, rinse it under warm water once a week. Once a month, clean your filter completely with the recommended filter cleaning products.

Finally, while changing the water can be time consuming, the upside is that it immediately resolves water issues that occur during times of heavy use. If you change the water at least every three months, you'll enjoy a cleaner hot tub.
If you're running short on time, you can always contact your hot tub dealer. They will often have experts who can maintain your water at regular intervals so it looks and smells great.

Invest in Professional Service

Regularly investing in professional maintenance services is one of the best ways to improve your hot tub's longevity. If you are a new hot tub owner and have issues keeping your water clean and balanced, a professional can answer your questions, provide you with tips, and recommend products, accessories, and service plans to make maintenance easier.

Professionals can also provide extended maintenance services to keep your hot tub running its best. This includes properly cleaning your filter, flushing pipes with commercial cleaners, and adjusting components. They will also clean strainer baskets, shells, and water lines that you cannot easily maintain yourself. If you want to improve your hot tub's massage capabilities, a professional will have the knowledge to adjust your jets for top performance.

It's a great idea to call a professional at least once a year for a complete cleaning and inspection. Your maintenance team will inspect all aspects of your hot tub and provide you with services that are best done by an expert. This includes removing jets and housing and providing deep cleaning of these components. They will even refill your hot tub and ensure that it is fully treated and balanced.

Staying on top of hot tub maintenance is the best way to keep your hot tub in peak condition now and in the future.

My brother is wanting to purchase a hot tub for his home. He has been told that it could help him with his back pain. I didn't realize that professional hot tub cleaners offer maintenance plans that include filter cleaning, flushing pipes, and adjusting water components. That seems like a really good option for my brother.

I agree that it is a good idea to create a maintenance schedule for your hot tub. It is important to remember that keeping this in mind can help you make sure your investment is protected and pays off. I would want to make sure I consult with a professional so I can get the best advice on how to keep my feature working like new for as long as I can.
