Save Money With Proper Hot Tub Insulation

Posted 12/1/2016

Among the most common questions we're asked at Hydropool is “how much does it cost to run a hot tub?” The answer always depends on the quality of your hot tub and its insulation. Quality hot tubs cost as little as $1.00 to $1.50 per day to run.

Insulation is a vital part of choosing a hot tub that will save you energy and money. Over the years, Hydropool has implemented a series of innovations designed to create superior insulation that fully benefits owners. Below you'll learn about how we've evolved our technologies and which features will help you save the most.

Innovations in Insulation Technology

Hydropool insulation has come a long way over the course of our history.

Our earliest hot tub models utilized foam insulation which held in heat, but didn't retain heat from the pipes or motors. Service was also difficult, as any leaks required technicians to literally dig up the plumbing to address them. In response, we utilized a perimeter insulation system. This system insulated only the walls and retained waste heat from the well and pipes. This was a huge improvement over the previous system, but problems arose because of a lack of air flow that caused the cabinet to overheat. Leaks and a lack of support for plumbing were also problematic.

As we continued to innovate, we thought that investigating how astronauts were insulated in space would help us develop the best in insulation technology. We applied the thermal shield blanket concept and thick covers to retain cabinet waste heat and thermal vents to prevent overheating. The end result was the Hydrowise Triple Thermal Shield System.

Key Energy Saving Features

When your goal is energy savings, there are many features you can look for in a hot tub.

First, it's important to seek out heat locking technologies and adjustable venting that can reuse the motor's waste heat to heat the hot tub in winter and expel this heat when necessary in summer.

Also look for a hot tub that is Commission for Environmental Cooperation approved, as this is a strong indication that you're purchasing one of the most energy efficient hot tubs on the market.

Knowing the filtration rate is another good way to understand whether a hot tub is efficient. Models that filter water more quickly are more energy-efficient, as are those that use low-amperage filtration pumps.

High-quality hard covers such as 3 to 4-inch tapered covers with insulated bumpers will also lock in heat. Finally, investing in sealed cabinets and plastic flooring will improve your hot tub's insulation during the winter months.

Now that you know how to save money and energy, it's time to start your hot tub quest!
