Answers to Common Hot Tub Questions

Posted 4/20/2017

If you're ready to buy a hot tub, it's likely that you have questions about things you should know before making such a big investment.

Below we've gathered some of the most commonly asked hot tub questions and given you the answers you need to make a confident decision.

What is the Best Type of Hot Tub?

If ease of use is your priority, it makes sense to invest in a portable spa so you won't have to excavate, have electrical work done, or add external plumbing. You can simply plug in your hot tub, heat the water, and hop in. You can also move them between indoors and outdoors during different seasons.

If you want to create an aesthetically pleasing deck or patio, an inground model is a good choice. These kinds of installations require electrical, plumbing, and potentially gas work, but your dealer can help you arrange these services. Inground hot tubs are also a great way to add value to your home.

How Much Does Running a Hot Tub Cost?

With today's advanced technologies, there are many energy-efficient hot tubs that cost little to run. For example, Hydropool hot tubs, which are some of the most energy-efficient in the world, cost just a few cents per day to run. You may pay more for an energy-efficient hot tub, but it will save you money in the long-run.

Your energy bills will also be dependent on the temperature you keep your hot tub at and how frequently you use it. To hold heat in, choose a model with superior insulation.

Which Features Are Best?

Again, each person is different, so this really depends on your style and preferences. Looking at a variety of hot tubs and "wet testing" each one to get a feel for how much you like specific kinds of seating, massage features, and jets is a good idea.

There are also specific features that are good for specific lifestyles. For people who like to entertain, stereo systems, ice buckets, bars, and custom lighting can be essential. At the other end of the spectrum, soft lighting and natural greenery can be a great way to create an intimate atmosphere.

When ease and leisure are at the top of your list, look for features like digital control pads inside the hot tub so you don't have to get out to adjust the functions. You can also choose from different jet arrangements, numbers, and styles to suit your needs.

Many people want to keep maintenance as simple as possible. If this is true for you, self-cleaning hot tubs and ozonators can both free up time and energy with their automatic maintenance, cleaning, and filtering features.

What Should I Do First?

Rather than rushing to buy a hot tub, take time to read consumer reviews to find high-quality products and avoid those that are less than ideal.

Once you visit your dealer, request a "wet test" so you can sit in the full hot tub to see what it feels like.

Don't forget to ask your dealer key questions about energy efficiency, jets, maintenance, and other areas. Also inquire about optional features that might be best for your lifestyle. Finally, make sure a quality warranty is part of the deal and that it covers parts, shell, and components.

I really like your recommendation to simply read reviews on certain hot tubs to see what customers think of it. It makes sense that some hot tubs would look good on paper but end out being unreliable or not work right. It's something I'll have to remember because if I get a hot tub, the maintenance and repair schedule is important for me to know to ensure it's taken care of properly.
