Hot Tub Tips for Summer Maintenance
Most people invest in hot tubs because they want to add more relaxation to their lives, but become overwhelmed and stressed by the maintenance involved.
Below, you'll find out how to easily stay on top of maintenance tasks as well as what to look for in a hot tub to make maintenance faster and simpler.
Don't Neglect the Cover
Purchasing a hot tub cover is one of the best ways to reduce the maintenance level you'll have to endure. Covers reduce the amount of skimming you'll need to do because they keep unwanted debris out of your hot tub at night and during stormy weather.
Because they keep rain water out, they also help to keep your water chemistry balanced. An added benefit is that they retain heat, which makes your hot tub more energy-efficient and saves you money.
Skimmers
Even with a cover, some debris like dirt, leaves, and insects will enter your hot tub during the day. While it may seem unsubstantial and easy to neglect, if you don't clean up debris quickly it can sink to the bottom of your hot tub and make cleanup more difficult. It can also clog your filter, damage internal components, and lead to expensive repairs.
Skimming every day is a good way to prevent this task from becoming overwhelming. Invest in a skimmer with a telescopic handle to remove floor debris.
Vacuums
Even if you skim, some small particles of debris will sink to the bottom of your hot tub, but a quality vacuum can help you easily remove it. Some vacuums attach to the skimmer, making it easy to skim and vacuum at once. Higher quality vacuums are worth the investment because they are more reliable and produce faster results.
Brushes
Algae, calcium, and other forms of buildup can make your hot tub look less than its best. Keeping a brush on hand that you can use for the sides and bottom will keep your hot tub looking clean and sparkling.
Choose a soft brush that won't damage your tile and use it once a week. Focus especially on the area near the water line, as buildup of oils and sunscreen can cause dirty buildup. If you find that you've removed a lot of residue, always vacuum afterwards to ensure that it doesn't remain on the bottom.
Chemicals
Keeping your hot tub balanced will save you endless time and stress. Take readings of the water chemistry three times a week when it's hot out and once per week in cooler weather. If you notice a water balance issue, add chemicals to correct it right away. Once a hot tub becomes unbalanced, it can take a lot of hard work to return it to a clean, clear, balanced state.
