Choosing Between Portable and In-Ground Hot Tubs

Posted 5/11/2017

With a huge variety of hot tub styles on the market, it can be hard to know which to choose. One of the biggest decisions people struggle with is whether to buy a portable, above-ground hot tub or a permanent, in-ground hot tub.

Below you'll learn which factors to consider to make the right choice for your lifestyle.

Consider Your Wiring

If your property is electrically wired and easy to access, a portable hot tub can give you a lot of freedom in terms of location. Not only can you move it to a new spot with relative ease, but you can move it seasonally so it follows the sun's position. You can also move it so you can fully experience the changing scenery of each season.

If you live in a cool climate, choosing an above ground hot tub can make it easier to position your hot tub near your house, which will allow your guests to stay warm while moving from the hot tub to indoors.

If you install a hot tub permanently and later discover that you don't like the location, you'll be stuck with it regardless. If you do decide on a permanent installation, make sure to choose a location that is aesthetically pleasing so you can take in the sights, smells, and sounds of every season.

Consider Your Budget

Permanent hot tubs cost more than portable ones, so depending on your needs and budget it might make sense to purchase a portable hot tub. Of course, a portable hot tub isn't always cheaper. For example, if you buy a top-of-the-line portable hot tub and build a deck or gazebo around it, you could end up spending more than you would on an in-ground hot tub.

To find out what would work best for your price range, ask your dealer to draw up an estimate of the purchase and installation costs of models you're considering and go from there. This will ensure that you have all the information you need to make the right decision.

Other Considerations

Above ground hot tubs tend to require less maintenance than permanent hot tubs, so this can be a plus. In addition, they cost on average $20-$30 per month, while an inground hot tub costs over $30 per month.

On the flipside, inground installations are often more aesthetically pleasing as they can be attached to your pool area or incorporated into the style of your yard or garden. They can also be designed in a range of shapes and sizes that will fit your style.
