Protecting Your Hot Tub from Extreme Weather

Posted 5/17/2017

Both hot and cold weather can reduce your hot tub's lifespan, but by knowing how to protect your hot tub from the elements, you can keep it running in top condition for longer.

Below you'll learn tips for keeping your hot tub safe even in extreme temperatures and conditions.

Cold Weather

In places with brutal winters, a hot tub must be properly winterized. If you don't take the right precautions to keep your hot tub safe from cold and ice, it can become so damaged that repair will be impossible.

If you know temperatures will be very low for a long period of time and you won't be using your hot tub, draining it is the best course of action. Make sure to use a shop vac to fully drain all of the water from the fittings and jets. If your hot tub features air blowers, you'll also need to get the water out of these areas.

If you drain your hot tub, removing all water is essential as any remaining water can freeze and cause serious damage. Once your hot tub is drained, put on the cover and secure it with a strap. This will keep out snow, rain, and other debris.

Sun

To keep your hot tub cover in good condition, you'll want to keep it out of the sun. This is because UV rays can cause vinyl covers to become cracked and brittle.

Using a UV protectant cleaner is a good first step as this will prevent cracking and drying. Follow the product's directions, which usually ask you to repeat this process every three months. Make sure to avoid any protectants that are not designed for your hot tub, especially if they contain alcohol and petroleum as these will only cause more damage.

Wind

Storms can create high winds that can send debris directly into your spa. Even if your cover is on, a strong wind will whisk it into the air. Make sure you have a locking cover to prevent it from flying off and becoming damaged. Covers can be expensive, so you want to keep yours safe!
