Another thing that will influence the current control is the size of the pump.  For hardcore swimmers there are high performance pumps that will allow you to swim at close to full force.  Pumps are typically measured by gallons per minute.  Obviously, the more gallons per minute the pump is rated for the stronger a current it will create.
