Can You Use a Hot Tub in The Winter

Can You Use Hot Tub in Winter?

Posted 2/25/2019

One of the most commonly asked questions that hot tub dealers get from potential buyers is “Can I use my hot tub in the winter?” In short, yes, you absolutely can. In fact, many people find that winter soon becomes their favorite season to use their hot tub. That being said, there are a few things that you should keep in mind when operating your hot tub in the winter. Keep reading below to learn some helpful tips to make sure that you get the most enjoyment possible from your winter hot tub usage.

Invest in a Quality Cover

Always keeping the water in your hot tub warm will let you jump in whenever you please. However, with the cool outside air, this can require more effort and energy consumption. By investing in a quality, lockable hot tub cover, you will not only reduce your energy bills but will be able to keep your water temperature warm and stable. To add an extra layer of insulation, you can also place a thermal blanket, which lays on the water's surface under the cover.

Keep Jets Off

When you are not using your hot tub, keep your jets turned off. Jets function by pushing air into the water (which in the winter is cold air!) and that air will eventually decrease the water temperature or require more energy to heat the water. Obviously, run the jets and massage programs while you are in the hot tub, but keep the jets turned off when not in use to help keep your water at the ideal temperature.

Monitor Water Levels

It is important to monitor your water levels in the winter to make sure that your pump and heater do not get damaged. If your water level happens to drop too low, there is a risk that the motor will stop functioning and the water could freeze, which could result in burst pipes or a cracked shell.

Changing Water

Even if it may be a bit ahead of your typical water changing schedule, make sure that you change the water in your hot tub before the really cold-water hits. Not only is it unpleasant to be draining and filling your hot tub when it is freezing cold outside, but it also can result in pipes freezing and damage.

Length of Soaks

While sitting in a warm, soothing hot tub to escape the cold sounds wonderful, it is important to not spend too much time in your hot tub in one session as it may be dangerous for your health. The difference in temperature between your hot tub water and the air is even more drastic in the winter and your body is going from heated water to extreme cold, which can shock your system or even in some cases cause someone to lose consciousness. As a rule of thumb, keep your hot tub soaks to 20 minutes or less.

Fire Pit

If you want to still enjoy the outdoors in between using your hot tub, consider building a large fire pit. This can be the perfect way to relax before or after your hot tub session with a warm mug of cocoa. Although, on very cold days, the fire pit may not be able to keep you warm enough and you may need to just head directly to your hot tub!
