How Hot Does a Swim Spa Get?

Posted 7/26/2019

For those who can’t (or don’t want to) deal with the price tag or space considerations of a full-sized swimming pool but want something more than a simple hot tub or lap pool, swim spas are a great alternative.  It’s not surprising that a lot of people still aren’t quite sure exactly what swim spas are.  We get a lot of questions about them.  This includes the amount of space they require, how they work, how hot does a swim spa get and many more.  In this article, we’ll go over the basics of a swim spa to shine more light on this ever-growing sector.

What Is A Swim Spa?

Swim spas provide the middle ground between hot tubs and lap pools.  Swim spas are much smaller than lap pools but slightly bigger than hot tubs.  This allows them to be installed in tight urban environments that wouldn’t allow for a lap pool or full-sized swimming pool.  A swim spa generates a powerful current that allows one to practice their swimming stroke without actually moving forward.  This creates a type of underwater treadmill effect which means the swimmer never reaches the end of the pool or needs to turn around.  And because of the tank’s small size, the water temperature can be easily raised to reach as high as 40 degrees Celsius, the warmth of a hot tub.

How Does A Swim Spa Work?

The swim spa generates its strong water current using powerful water jets or a paddlewheel.  The strength of the current can be controlled by the user to allow a variety of different swimming strokes and intensities to be performed.  For those who may have multiple users with different preferences, there are dual tank models that simultaneously allow a swimmer to practice their stroke in regular temperature water while others soak in a separate tank with hot tub temperature water.

What Else Can A Swim Spa Be Used For?

Beyond simply swimming or soaking, swim spas have a variety of other uses.  They can be used for aquasize programs which allow people with arthritis, mobility problems or other conditions which prevent performing high impact exercises on dry land.  The jets and warm water can be used in various hydrotherapy programs.  And when the weather gets too hot, the water temperature can be reduced to provide a refreshingly cold dip.

What Type of Swim Spa Is Best?

The swim spa most suitable for you will depend on how you plan on using it.  For those with children, a dual tank spa can allow the family to spend time together even when intense exercise is being performed.  For the serious solo athlete, a single tank model might be all that’s required.  It’s simple enough to adjust the temperature for the desired use.  You’ll also have to ask yourself how much you’re willing to spend.  Cheap models may cost several thousand dollars, but more expensive models can cost you more than a mid-priced car.  You should also take into account how much space you have for installation.  Although much smaller than a swimming pool, you’ll still need to dedicate a decent amount of space for a swim spa.

Energy Efficiency and Maintenance

If you plan to use your swim spa in colder weather, it’ll be worth it to pay more upfront for a well-insulated model.  This will save you money in heating costs over the long run.  A pressurized filtration system will also cost you more but save you time in cleaning and maintenance.  Suction filtration models are cheaper but will require more effort to keep clean.
