Where to Put a Hot Tub in a Garden

Where to Put a Hot Tub in a Garden?

Posted 3/2/2020

One of the first things you have to consider when buying a new hot tub is where you’re going to put it. There is an incredible number of nightmare stories of people having a hot tub delivered to their home and not being able to install it because of oversights in measurement, space, foundation, etc. Before you lay down your hard-earned cash, it’s imperative that you make sure your new arrival will fit! So, where to put a hot tub in a garden? In this article, we’ll cover some of the important things to consider when deciding on a location for your new hot tub.

Proximity To Your House

How close your hot tub is to your house is a great predictor of how often you’ll use it. This is especially true if you plan to use your hot tub all year round and brave the cold, Canadian winters. If for whatever reason, installing the hot tub close to your backdoor isn’t a possibility, you might want to consider building a small shed to act as a change room. A well-tended path will also make the dash from your house to the tub much more palatable while serving to help keep the water clean and free of debris.

Privacy

Being exposed to all your neighbours while soaking in your hot tub isn’t the best way to relax and unwind. If you can choose a spot that offers some privacy and shields you from prying eyes, you’ll feel much more compelled to use the hot tub as much as possible. If there isn’t a naturally secluded spot available in your backyard you might consider putting up some visual barriers to allow you to feel completely at ease.

Leaves, Pollen And Other Plant Debris

Keeping your hot tub away from deciduous trees or other plants that shed leaves or produce a lot of pollen will reduce the amount of water maintenance duties you’ll have to perform. The more organic materials that get into the water, the more likely the growth of algae, bacteria, and other nasty contaminants. With all else being equal, it’s best to choose a spot away from leaf and pollen dropping trees.

A Flat And Level Base

Your hot tub most definitely needs a flat and level base for it to sit upon. A hot tub full of water will weigh hundreds to thousands of pounds - and that’s before anybody actually gets into it. For this reason, a solid, stable and level base is an absolute necessity. If your backyard is relatively level you could get away with a simple gravel bed. You’ll just need to make sure it won’t shift or settle. More common is a concrete pad or series of concrete pavers covered in cement. Due to the uneven bottom of the hot tub, the hot tub is laid on the fresh cement and settles naturally. A cheaper alternative to concrete is a set of prefabricated pads that mold to the bottom of the hot tub. Decks and patios are also very popular, but you need to ensure they can withstand the weight of a fully-loaded hot tub. If you’re unsure it’s best to speak to a structural engineer for advice.

Electrical Supply

Your hot tub will need to have access to a dedicated electrical supply. Depending on the model of the hot tub you end up getting, this may be more than just a simple electrical outlet found on the outside of your house or garage. Many of the larger hot tub models will require a GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter.) You’ll need a certified electrician for the job and the closer to the house, the cheaper it will be to install.
